I wish I could hug Elias through the Intarrrrwebs
Saturday, August 26th, 2006Elias: i will eat you alive.
Yes, folks, that was an actual IM conversation I had tonight. Because I did, as I said, send my new advisor my thesis preproposal. 1.5 pages, single-spaced, of what I believe to be coherent thoughts about analyzing the language of breastfeeding articles that have appeared in mainstream parenting magazines and their relationship to formula advertising in those same magazines and the implications of that language and that relationship on the health of American women and children. If you want to read the actual thing, let me know and I’ll e-mail it to you. Not that anyone reading this cares on anything more than a tangential “that’s a cool thing you’re doing” level, but whatev.
Today was my birthday party. Yeah, a few days late, because Llamaface was in Vegas for his business thingy. He had to work today, too though, and that kind of sucked. Not a lot of people made it, either, and that kind of sucked. Brought me back to my childhood, when I’d invite everyone in my class & then some to my birthday parties, my mom would make enough food for everyone I’d invited and then 2 or 3 people would come and I’d feel like a loser. Summer birthdays are hard that way. Reilly was here with her boyfriend, Talana & Matt were here, Mom & Phredd came, my upstairs neighbors came with their daughter just 2 months younger than Andy, and Tonya showed up after she got off work. That sounds like a lot, but given I invited 30 or so people, I was a little sad. Still am, though Blues Traveller on my new Nano* helps. Party food included tomato & olive Foccaccia bread, baked chicken, salmon burgers, a grape medley, strawberries with white & milk chocolate, Reilly’s famous spinach dip in a sourdough breadbowl, sparkling lemonade & sparkling blood orange juice, and a birthday cheesecake with “Happy Day” written on it in chocolate. Have very few leftovers, but I baked up a bunch of extra chicken & froze it because cooking after a full day of tending to 50+ children and Boogermonkey is just not my idea of a fun time.
In knitting (k)news, I’m getting nearly done with the blackberry hat and the first of the pair of UO glittens. The monster doll is at 80%, and I’m itching to start something for ME. I bought birthday yarn at a store in Salem: 50% llama, 50% wool (cascade yarns pastaza, on sale 20% off) in plum, sage, chocolate, and raspberry. The neatly-wound muffins will become fingerless mitts and a hat. Probably the fingerless mitt pattern from Last Minute Knitted Gifts, which I bought with anticipated birthday money from the Powell’s in PDX while waiting for Llama’s (hour-late) flight. I’m thinking nearly everyone’s Christmas gifts will come from that book this year. And I really really want to make hourglass for myself & the ribbed zip-up jacket for Llama (but in different colors because OMG that brown & that orange? ew).
